How to export from Brainscape

  1. In Brainscape, open the deck's options menu and choose export. This needs Brainscape Pro.
  2. If the file isn't a .csv, open it in Excel or Google Sheets and save it as CSV UTF-8.
  3. Upload the CSV above and click Convert & Download .apkg.

Brainscape's help centre says Pro users can export a deck from its options menu into a file that opens in Excel. Checked 1 October 2026. Without Pro, copy your questions and answers into two spreadsheet columns and paste them into the box.

What carries over

  • Questions and answers become Basic Anki cards.
  • Multi-field cards: if the columns are labeled the way Brainscape documents them (Q. Prompt, Q. Body, Q. Clarifier, Q. Footnote, A. Body, A. Clarifier, A. Footnote), the question fields are combined on the front and the answer fields on the back, each on its own line.
  • Images and rich formatting don't come across. Cards show plain text.
  • Confidence ratings and study history stay in Brainscape. Anki treats every card as new.

Troubleshooting

  • No export option in the menu: exporting needs Brainscape Pro. Copy the cards into a spreadsheet instead.
  • Your header row became a card: make sure the first row names the columns, such as Question and Answer.
  • Strange characters instead of accents: re-save the file as CSV UTF-8.
  • Some rows were skipped: those rows had a question but no answer.
