How to Export Brainscape Flashcards to Anki

Brainscape has no Anki button, but Pro users can export a deck to a spreadsheet file. Here's how to get from that file to an Anki deck.

What Brainscape Lets You Export

Brainscape's help centre says Pro users can export a deck from the deck options menu, and that the file can be opened in Excel and re-uploaded to Brainscape or another flashcard app. Free accounts don't get the export option. The help centre doesn't say whether decks made by other users or Brainscape's certified classes can be exported, so check the options menu on the deck you want.

Step-by-Step: Brainscape Pro Export

   Export the deck

   In Brainscape, open the deck's options menu and choose export. Save the file it gives you.

   Check the columns

   Open the file in Excel or Google Sheets. Brainscape treats two unlabeled columns as question and answer, and also uses labeled columns such as Q. Prompt, Q. Body and A. Body for cards with extra fields.

   Save as CSV (UTF-8) if needed

   If the export isn't already a .csv, use File → Download → Comma-separated values in Sheets, or Save As → CSV UTF-8 in Excel.

   Import into Anki

   Upload the CSV to the Brainscape to Anki converter and import the .apkg it gives you. Or use File → Import in Anki and map the question column to Front and the answer column to Back.

Without Pro: Copy to a Spreadsheet

   Open your deck in the editor

   In Brainscape, open the deck and edit its cards, so you can see each question and answer.

   Paste into a spreadsheet

   Copy each card into Google Sheets or Excel, question in Column A, answer in Column B, one row per card.

   Convert it

   Copy both columns and paste them into the converter, or save as CSV UTF-8 and import it into Anki with File → Import.
