Yes, but not by drawing pretty arrow GIFs. Mechanism cards come out as stepwise cloze deletions, with one curved-arrow step hidden per card. You have to reconstruct the arrow-pushing yourself, which is the thing orgo exams test. Memorizing the final product never worked for anyone I've talked to.
Build reaction cards from your textbook (reagent on the front, product, conditions, and stereochemistry on the back). Then do 30 to 45 minutes of spaced review every day, starting around six weeks out. Cluster them by reaction type. Substitutions, eliminations, additions, oxidations. Once you see the patterns, the volume stops feeling impossible.
For pattern recognition, it's fine. Chemical shift ranges, splitting, IR frequencies, MS fragmentation. All very flashcard-shaped. For full unknown-compound problems where you're piecing four spectra together, flashcards are a warmup, not the main event. You still need to grind practice problems.
During the semester, 15 to 20 minutes a day will keep reactions and mechanisms warm. Two weeks before a midterm or final, push it to about 45 to 60. Don't skip problem sets to do more cards. Flashcards train recall; problem sets train application. You need both.
