Every note format — typed, Cornell, slide exports, handwritten scans — has a conversion path. Here's the fastest one for each.
Notes are for capturing information. Flashcards are for retaining it. The fastest students convert their notes into flashcard decks immediately after each lecture, then use spaced repetition to review them — rather than returning to the notes themselves at exam time.
Typed notes (Word documents, Google Docs, Notion pages, plain text) are the easiest format to convert. The text is machine-readable, well-structured, and usually organised by topic.
Read through the notes section by section. For each key fact, write a question (front) and answer (back). Follow the rule of one fact per card — don't bundle multiple concepts together. This takes roughly 1 hour per 10 pages of dense notes.
Paste the text or upload the document. The AI identifies all discrete facts, writes Q&A pairs following proper flashcard design rules, and outputs a complete deck. The same 10 pages takes 60–90 seconds.
Cornell notes have a built-in Q&A structure: the cue column (left) contains questions or keywords, the main column contains the answers. This maps almost directly to flashcard format.
Use each cue column entry as a card front and the corresponding main column content as the back. The cue column was designed for this — it's essentially a flashcard front already. Trim the back to remove anything not directly relevant to the cue.
Upload or paste the full Cornell notes. AI can recognise the structure and convert it more efficiently than any other note type, since the Q&A separation already exists. You can also ask it to expand beyond the cue column structure if the notes are sparse.
Lecture slides present a unique challenge: they contain bullet points, which are summaries rather than full explanations. Converting slide bullets directly to flashcards often produces cards that are too sparse to be useful.
The slide-to-flashcard problem
A slide bullet like "ACE inhibitors — renal protection" is too vague to be a useful flashcard. You need to know: in what patient population? What is the mechanism? What's the evidence? Slides compress information; good flashcards expand it back out.

Handwritten notes are the hardest to convert because they're not machine-readable without OCR. Your options:
Take a clear photo of your handwritten notes and run it through an OCR tool (Google Lens, Adobe Scan, or the camera input in most AI flashcard generators). OCR quality depends heavily on handwriting legibility. Works well for neat, printed handwriting; struggles with cursive or messy writing.
If handwriting is a regular part of your workflow, consider switching to a tablet with a stylus (iPad + Apple Pencil, or Android equivalent). Digital handwriting apps like Notability or GoodNotes can export to PDF, making conversion much easier.
For short, high-priority notes, the most reliable method is to type up the key points yourself, then paste them into an AI generator. This forces a first pass of active recall during the typing.

Converting notes to flashcards is only valuable if the resulting cards are well-designed. The most common mistake is converting too literally — turning every bullet point into a card, resulting in hundreds of shallow recognition-only cards.
